Increase in profanity is an indicator decline in society's morals

The increase in societys use of offensive language is a DEFINITE indicator of a lack of morals. People in society today use these words carelessly to figures of authority they should not be used against. People use them even though the underlying repugnant meaning is acknowledged world wide! Teens swearing at their parents, people of all ages swearing at police, young children learning these fowl words at such an inoccent age! Profanity portrays disrespect in a single word, take your pick. Respect is a prided moral that we are lacking. Swearing is vulgar, rude, and insulting.

For one, the words have become casual in some cases. The younger generation uses them out of context where the older generations know the real meanings and take offense. It's immoral to bring offensive words to your elders. It's shocking and rude.

Secondly, often people of all ages, when agrivated, use these words on authorities such as police officers who are only placed there to help. Many would look down on our society for our complete lack of concern when berating an officer. If a police officer is talking to you, or stopping your vehicle, it is likely your own fault and you should own up. Swearing and throwing profanities is offensive and immature. It gives a sad look on today society.

Lastly, these words used to only be used by adults. If someone younger did swear it was certainly taboo to use the words in front of their parents, or even a teacher. It's gotten younger though, kids who are barely old enough to speak are heard useing the offensive words. Teenagers are swearing at their parent whom they should other wise be treating with the utmost respect. The lack of morals in todays society is reflected through our abuse of profanities.

Against: Plain and simply, swearing is nothing. They are just words, people know they are just words. It's a persons society that give the words any sort of meaning.

One could consider it immature to be bothered by something as small as a word. It's only offensive because people make it that way. It's quite possible if you went to a foreign part of the world and used an english swear word, they wouldn't know what it means. In not knowing what it means they wouldn't be offended. There fore the word is just a word, nothing else.

Also, the words all have their own meaning. Honestly, they are a just a crude meaning for something else that people decided to call each other. To say that these words are insulting is plain sillyness. For example, bit** originates from the "female dog," whats so bad about that?

The new age sees these words for what they really are, the uses are not only out of rage, but now a casual use. It down plays the harmful value of a curse word, it's no longer something to be concerned about.
